There are times when you are interested in knowing what version of Ubuntu is being used. While working with desktop or GUI you get this information on login screen. But when you are logged in to the server then if you want to know the version of Ubuntu, this article will help you to understand that.
Using the terminal
I find this is very much productive way to find distribution-specific information. If you are using desktop hit
Ctrl+Alt+t, terminal window will appear. Or if you are already logged in to the server hit the below command in terminal-
$ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS Release: 16.04 Codename: xenial
lsb_release command basically prints distribution-specific information, which is originally written by Chris Lawrence.
From the top corner of your desktop, click on option and select the first option “About this computer”. This should show the details you need.
